教学目的和要求:
1.掌握有关means of transportation的表达方式,了解常用交通方式的advantages and disadvantages;
2.现在进行时表将来时;
3.有关河流的知识,如世界上主要的河流,最大的河流,最长的河流;
4.有关湄公河的简介
重点难点:
1.means of transportation的比较及其表达;
2.how people make use of rivers living besides a river

Introduction
T: Toady, we are going to come to a new unit—unit 3. Class, can you tell me what the title of this unit is?
Ss: Travel journal.
T: Good! First, I want to ask you a question. How was your National Holiday? What did you do during this holiday?
(ask two or three Ss to answer this question)
T: Ok, good! Then did anyone in our class go out or go traveling during this holiday? If so, where did you go?
Ss: ……
T: Ok, class, do you like traveling?
Ss: Yes!
T: Yeah, me too. Here I prepared some pictures for you. You know these places? Yes, these are the places that I want to go to very much.
(show the pictures on PPT to Ss)

About transportation & travel plan
T: Class, speaking of traveling, people often go from one place to another, right?
Ss: Yes!
T: So, what do you know will people use to go from one place to another?
Ss: Bus, train, car, on foot, plane, rocket……
T: Yes, you’re so clever! Yes, then we call all these “transportation”? Now, do you know what transportation is? And as for one of them we can say a “means of transportation”, clearly?
T: Just now, you’ve mentioned some means of transportation. And here I prepared some pictures of the means of transportation that people often use.
(show Ss the PPT—the main means of transportation)
T: So, class, do you know what people will consider before they decide which means of transportation they will choose? In other words, what can affect people’s decision? You can talk about it with your partner and tell me your answers, ok?

Ss: Price, long or short journey …….weather, money......
T: Yes, right! In fact, we should consider these factors-- you can look at the screen—cost, comfort, safety, convenience and quickness.
(show the PPT to Ss, and give some necessary explanation)
T: then class, if you are going to have a trip, which means of transportation will you choose?
Ss: ……
T: Ok, there must be some advantages of one means of transportation, and then you will choose it, right? You know “advantages”? For example, Yao Ming and XXX in our class, the height is Yao Ming’s advantage. Now, can you understand what “advantages” means?
Ss: Yes, 优点,优势……
T: Yes, you’re clever. Next, I want you to have a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of the main means of transportation. You can look at the chart at page 17. You can work with your partner. You have 5 minutes, ok? After your discussion, I will have some students write their answers on the blackboard.
(based on Ss’ answers to give some comments; introduce some words like convenient, experience, enjoyable, comfortable… )
T: Ok, well done, boys and girls. Since you have chosen your means of transportation, now, talk about more details about the coming trip. You can refer to the page 17, some expressions are listed. So, class, what’s the tense of these sentences? 什么时态啊?
Ss: 现在进行时
T: 对,那么我们之前学过用现在进行时表将来时吧!这里大家可以复习一下这一用法,在后面我们还会详细地提到。Ok, before starting making up your dialogue, I can give you an example. Look at the screen; this is a dialogue about the plan of a trip. Here, the boys play the role of A and girls B, ok? You read out the dialogue together.

(Then let Ss make up dialogue; after that, two or three pairs of Ss are chosen to perform their dialogues to the whole class)

About rivers
T: Ok, class, have you ever traveled along a river?
Ss: Yes, Changjiang River!
T: Ok, good! Then do you know beside which river do we live?
Ss: Changjiang River!
T: Yes. Then, do you know how we make use of the Changjiang River? In fact, many people are living beside rivers just like us. What do the make use of the rivers?
(on the PPT, some aspects are listed: drink water in the river; wash clothes in the river; feed fish in the river; go fishing beside the river; eat some seafood; swim in summer and skate in winter; use the river to produce power; irrigate(灌溉)the fields; travel along the river……)

T: Ok, in fact, rivers play a very important role in our life. Do you know the famous “four civilizations”? In Chinese, we mean “文明,开化”, we can see where these civilizations are. Look at the map on the screen, we can easily find that all these civilizations are along the rivers, right?
T: Ok, if you are interested, you can find more information on this out of class. Now, let’s come back. Can you name some famous rivers in the world?
Ss: Changjiang River, Yellow River, 尼罗河,莱茵河……
T: Yes, good! Then do you know where these rivers flow through? Here, there is a quiz about rivers. On the left, it’s the names of some famous rivers, and on the right, it’s the countries they flow through. You need to match them. You have 1 minute to think about it.
(show the quiz on PPT to Ss)
T: Ok, let’s do it together……
(show some pictures of the rivers to Ss)
T: Ok, class, well done! By the way, if you have a chance to follow only one river of these, which one will you choose and why? Here, I just choose the Seine River. You can look at the reasons on the PPT……
T: If you are interested in this, you can find more information about this and write a paragraph on this, ok?
T: Then, class, let’s come to the Mekong River. In this unit, we are going to know something about this river. Here, I can give you a brief introduction about this river……
(show Ss the PPT to let Ss see what the Mekong River looks like, which countries it flow through; when introducing the countries, teach them how to read these names)

T: Ok, class, let’s have a review what we have talked about in this class?
Ss: Travel, means of transportation, rivers……
T: Great! Then do you all understand these points?
Ss: Yes.
